Who We Are
The Attorney General of New York, serving as both the "People's Lawyer" and the State's chief legal officer, is dedicated to safeguarding the legal rights of citizens, organizations, and natural resources in New York. By providing guidance to the Executive branch and defending the State's interests in legal matters, the Attorney General plays a crucial role in addressing various issues that impact residents' daily lives. The Office is empowered to protect consumers, investors, public health, civil rights, and businesses, while overseeing significant investigations through the State Organized Crime Task Force and Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. With a robust team of over 650 Assistant Attorneys General and a workforce of 1,700 professionals, the Department of Law is organized into five core divisions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to justice and legal enforcement across the State, thus exemplifying reliability and a commitment to excellence in service.
