Multnomah County, the most populous of Oregon's 36 counties with approximately 766,135 residents, operates within an area of 465 square miles, making it the smallest county geographically in the state. This county employs around 5,600 personnel to deliver a comprehensive range of essential services, including support for seniors and individuals with disabilities, animal services, assessment and taxation, community justice, health services, and more. Governed by a board of four commissioners elected by district, along with countywide elected officials such as the board chair, sheriff, district attorney, and auditor, Multnomah County emphasizes transparency and community engagement through weekly board meetings held every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Their history dates back to December 22, 1854, named in recognition of the native peoples of the region, highlighting a legacy of commitment and service to the community.
